Memory Paintings

“I grew up on a farm. I have vivid memories from very early years. These small quiet paintings are done largely from memory using a medium conducive to meditation. Egg tempera begins with the ritual of panel making: sawing wood, heating water for glue, mixing powders for gesso (the farm: dirt, trees); Grinding pigments, breaking eggs, cleaning the yolk (the farm: mud, animals). Fixing an image to a memory is tricky. Sometimes the images surprise me. They make themselves and don’t correspond to anything but my dream-like sensations.”
